Stepping up to the plate, the South Plainfield Recreation Commission approved exploration of a youth baseball league in February of 1955.
You’ll note our use of the terms “youth baseball”, “small fry” and “junior baseball” cropping up frequently. The “Little League” term was never used in South Plainfield because it legally belonged to Little League Baseball Inc., the national organization to which South Plainfield’s leagues never belonged. Baseball in South Plainfield began in 1955 as the Small Fry League, with the organization’s name changing in 1956 to the South Plainfield Junior Athletic Club and finally to the South Plainfield Junior Baseball Club (the name it retains to this day).
